In an interview conducted by Louis Morris Starr, Chappell discusses his family background; early interest and studies in art; George Grady; the Strawberry Hill press; his study in Germany with Rudolf Koch; the art of cutting type; Boardman Robinson; the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center; the creation of Lydian and Trajanus type; and book design for Alfred A. Knopf, Harcourt Brace, Little Brown and the Limited Editions Club. Also his books "Short history of the printed word" and "The living alphabet"; book design using "Mastering the art of French cooking" as an example; illustrations for music books, "Moby Dick," "Gullivar's travels," and Dickens' Christmas stories; opinions of various publishing firms; and Oscar Ogg. With the interview are 10 photographs of Chappell.
